In the santal society there are many types of Arts which are nose easy in santal society. They believe that it is compulsory for females to draw and paint the floor and wall during ordinary and special festive occasion. There are many types of Arts draw on women's body. This called body decoration.


Body decoration is usually done on the body which is called khoda (Tattoo) the colour used is black. It is mostly adopted by the women. Mole does not go for it at all still now also, because tattoo is mostly taboos for sandals men. And other art is Ornament. The santal women they used the ornament on the body that is silver. Because they believe that white colour is likely for life. So, Santali women mostly sued the ornaments of silver ornaments. Because tribal women or mostly Santali women they cannot afford the money to purchase the gold ornaments. So they have own designing ornaments putting on body from legs to head, both the male and female used the silver ornaments.

Singing / Dancing

 

The santal society they have eight types of dance and songs are there which is very popular and enjoyable for Santali women.

 

1. Lagne Aa-nech ( Lagne dance and song )
2. Dong Aa-nech ( Dong dance and song )
3. Baha Aa-nech ( Baha dance and song )
4. Dahar Aa-nech ( Dahar dance and song )
5. Rinji Aa-nech ( Rinja dance and song )
6. Dasayin Aa-nech ( Dasayin dance and song )
7. Danta Aa-nech ( Dantha dance and song )
8. Patta Aa-nech ( Patta dance and song )

 

Dance and song are the part and parcel of the Santali way of life. Every santal men or women, boy and girl irrespective of them age, are familiar with the dance and song. So to say, santal society is a society of dance and song. For every festival occasion there is a particular type of dance and song.

 

1. Lagne dance and song

 

Each every village there is a "Dharam Akhra" Lagne dance is performed in the Akhra. The word lagne Means Langa Lagay Renag is medicines for driving out the tiredness. The santal are very Iaourtous people irrespective of sex. Generally agriculture is their occupation. Both male and female spend most of their day time in the field. 50 in the evening some amusement is required for them for relaxing the whole day tired especially that women are enjoying the Lagne dance. That's lagne dance is meant for that. 50 it has no season. It can be performed at any day whenever it is necessary. Generally lagne dance is performed at night after the dinner. Both male and female take part in the dance. The percentage of young participants is more than the other. Jagmajhi of the village is the leader of the dance, without his permission and presence no dance is performed. His duty is to make necessary arrangement for the dance and see that the discipline is maintained all through the dance, unmarried male and female can dance hand in hand but the dance with the married lady is forbidden.

 

Lagne dance is not at all a laborious dance; so to say it is a light dance. The movement of legs along with the body rhythm metrically is the main feature of the dance. So the world lagne is assumed to have been derived from the word "Leagem" means slowly and rhythm metrically. The pitch of the songs is also very eight.

Role of women

 

The Santali women most that unmarried girls they can only dance and Sing the song. They cannot use any dancing instruments and they cannot dance with married lady.

 

2. Dong Aa-nech ( Dong dance and song )

 

The world dong is derived from the word DONN it means jump, so dong dance is performed by jumping only. It is held only in happy occasion like and birth day where everybody becomes mad out of joy. Even old man and women dance hand in hand with jumping during marriage ceremony like Duarbala the dance becomes so competitive between the bride and bride groom party that it continues for days together without stop.

 

 

3. Dahar Aa-nech ( Dahar dance and song )

 

Dahar means roads to daha means road side dance. It is does not required specific place. Any open place on the road is sufficient for this dance it begins from the north of mangha and ends are fagun. A Haha festival is the last day of the dance. There is historical philosophy regarding the origin of the dance it says "there was a time when people of different races were engaged in fighting with the others for their survival. The santal people were also engaged in fighting of that sort. When the male folk were out of the village for fighting the duty of the woman folk, was to keep the close watch on the village. In day time there was no problem to be vigilant but at night it was difficult. No dream is required only songs guide the dance. The song sang during the dance is called Dahar Song.

 

4. Rinja Aa-nech

 

In the Santal society Karam Bonga is believed to be the God of wealth.
He is worshiped in the month of September that is during th period of when paddy plants get maturing to give out the ears. During the time of worship the santal both male and female dance round the God in order to make him pleased so that GOD will bless every family of the village to be capable enough to give in credit something to some body. The word Rinja says, so the dance is known as rinji dance. This dance is one kind of sore dance. Rina dances and songs are forbidden in other times.

 

5. Dasayin Aa-nech ( Dasayin Dance )

 

These types of dance are only for male. Because Dasayin Dance are forbidden for women in the Santal society. Dasayin dance is different dance like -door to door and demand the rice or Handi (Rice Beer) it is the time of September or October months.

 

 

6. Danta Dance

 

This type of dance is danced by male person of santal society. This type of dances is dancing in month of December and January. The male person wears the costume and ornaments. Then they dance in field. But women are not allowed for this type of dances.

 

7. Patta Dance


This type of dance is both for male and female that male and female both they can enjoy the dance in field. In this case all villages and peoples come to the field for participate the dance. This type of dance is dancing in month of after May and before month of July.

 

Painting

 

In the santal society painting is two types. True thing is that painting source of talent in the Santal Society. The santal woman paints the walls and floor they use the different type of colour which is prepare by the mud. The santal people they paint about forest life, like animals painting, trees painting and different birds painting. This paint is painting by only santal women. There are two types of painting in santal society.

Wall painting and floor painting is only paint by women where men are painting in Jahar, there are painting is done by Molehal of village like Majhi Halam, Hodeth Halam, Paranik Halam, Jagmajhi Halam and Bhal Bhai Halam. And women cannot paints in Jaher. But they paints their Home. The santal women used the "TILOK HASA" (one type of mud for paint on the walls).
